IELTS for the USA 2026: Universities, Immigration & Professional Requirements

The F-1 student visa itself does not have a minimum IELTS score — but you must prove English proficiency to your university, which then issues the I-20 form required for your visa interview. Most US consulates accept your university's admission letter as sufficient proof.

For employment-based visas (H-1B, L-1, O-1), there is no federal IELTS requirement. However, USCIS officers may question your English ability during interviews. An IELTS score of 7.0+ strengthens your case, especially for client-facing roles.

The US does not recognize IELTS General Training for nursing. You need **IELTS Academic** with scores typically ranging from 6.5 to 7.0 overall, with no component below 6.5. Some states (California, New York, Texas) accept TOEFL as an alternative; others require specific IELTS sub-scores.

The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) evaluates your credentials and English proficiency before you can sit the NCLEX-RN. CGFNS accepts IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (6.0 in each component) for its Certificate Program — but individual state boards may set higher bars.

State-by-state variation is significant. California's Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) requires IELTS 7.0 overall with 7.0 in Speaking and Writing. Florida accepts 6.5 overall. New York requires 7.0. Always check your target state's board website directly.

**Doctors:** The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) requires IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with 7.0 in Speaking for clinical roles. Writing and Reading can be 6.5. This is higher than most other English-speaking countries.

**Teachers:** K-12 teaching licenses are state-issued. Most require IELTS Academic 6.5–7.0, but some districts (especially in California, Texas, and Florida) accept 6.0 if you complete an ESL endorsement. University teaching positions typically require 7.5+.

**Engineers:** No federal licensing body requires IELTS for engineering. However, state Professional Engineer (PE) licensure boards may require English proficiency proof if your degree was taught in a non-English language. IELTS 6.5 is usually sufficient.

If your target university accepts both, choose based on your strengths. IELTS Speaking is a live interview — better if you perform well in conversations. TOEFL Speaking is recorded — better if you prefer structured, timed responses without a human examiner.

IELTS Writing has two tasks (Task 1: 150 words, Task 2: 250 words). TOEFL Writing has an integrated task (reading + listening + writing) and an independent essay. If you struggle with multi-skill integration, IELTS may be easier.
