Common grammar mistakes in IELTS Writing: correction worksheet

Each sentence has one mistake. Find it and write the corrected sentence. The categories are the grammar errors that come up again and again in Task 2 essays. All example sentences were written for this worksheet.

1. Articles (a, an, the)

Tip: Singular countable nouns need an article. Use 'an' before a vowel sound, not a vowel letter. Abstract ideas in general take no article.

  1. 1.1My brother is studying to become engineer.

  2. 1.2The honesty is important in any friendship.

  3. 1.3It was an useful lesson for everyone in the room.

  4. 1.4Government should invest more in village schools.

2. Word forms

Tip: Check which job the word is doing: noun, verb, adjective or adverb. The idea can be right while the form is wrong.

  1. 2.1Regular exercise is benefit for both body and mind.

  2. 2.2Young people are becoming more independence from their parents.

  3. 2.3The council should act immediate to clean the river.

  4. 2.4The success of the project depends on careful plan.

3. Prepositions

Tip: Many adjectives and verbs come with a fixed preposition. Learn them as pairs: worried about, focus on, responsible for.

  1. 3.1Many families are worried for the cost of rent.

  2. 3.2Students should focus in their studies before exams.

  3. 3.3Each manager is responsible of a small team.

  4. 3.4She has lived in this city since five years.

4. Subject–verb agreement

Tip: Find the real subject, then match the verb to it. Words between the subject and the verb do not change the verb.

  1. 4.1Every student in the class have a laptop.

  2. 4.2The number of cyclists in our town are rising.

  3. 4.3Watching films in English help learners with listening.

  4. 4.4The benefits of this policy is clear.

5. Punctuation

Tip: A comma cannot join two full sentences. Do not put a comma between a subject and its verb. Use a colon to introduce a list.

  1. 5.1Technology saves time, however it can also distract us.

  2. 5.2Although cities offer more jobs. Many people prefer village life.

  3. 5.3Parents who read to their children, help them build vocabulary.

  4. 5.4There are three main causes, cost, time and a lack of information.
