IELTS for Nurses: Band Score Requirements for Nursing Registration Worldwide

Most nursing regulators in English-speaking countries set IELTS Academic minimums per skill, not just an overall band. The UK (NMC), Australia (NMBA) and New Zealand (NCNZ) all require 7.0 in Listening, Reading and Speaking and 6.5 in Writing. Ireland (NMBI) requires 7.0 overall, with 7.0 in any three skills and at least 6.5 in the fourth. In Canada, each provincial regulator sets its own minimum.

UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and Canada rows checked against the regulators' pages on 23 September 2026. Rules change, so confirm with your regulator before you book.

IELTS Academic at a test centre (paper, computer or UKVI): 7.0 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking and 6.5 in Writing, with no overall minimum. Two sittings within 12 months can be combined if no score is below 6.5 (6.0 in Writing). IELTS Online and One Skill Retake are not accepted.

Rules and exceptions

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) accepts IELTS Academic taken at a test centre, including the computer-delivered and UKVI versions. You need 7.0 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking and 6.5 in Writing. There is no overall-score requirement, and a high score in one skill cannot make up for a low one.

You can combine two sittings taken within 12 months of each other, both within two years of your application, if you reach the required score in each skill across them and no score in either sitting is below 6.5 (6.0 in Writing). IELTS Online, IELTS Indicator and One Skill Retake are not accepted. OET is accepted at grade B in Listening, Reading and Speaking and C+ in Writing.

After meeting English requirements, you’ll need to pass the Computer-Based Test (CBT) and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) before full NMC registration.

NMBA standard in force since 2025: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall, with 7.0 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking and 6.5 in Writing. Up to two sittings within 12 months can be combined if no score in either sitting is below 6.5. One Skill Retake is accepted.

Checked September 23, 2026

Rules and exceptions

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), working with Ahpra, requires IELTS Academic 7.0 overall, with 7.0 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking and 6.5 in Writing. The Writing minimum dropped from 7.0 to 6.5 when the revised English standard took effect in 2025.

You can use up to two sittings within 12 months, as long as no score in either sitting is below 6.5. One Skill Retake results are accepted. OET, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are alternatives; check the NMBA's accepted-test table for their current scores.

English is only one part of registration. The NMBA also assesses your qualification and may ask you to complete an outcomes-based assessment. The ANMAC skills assessment is a separate step for migration.

Canada

NNAS (Official page)

NNAS stopped collecting English test results in October 2022. Each provincial regulator, such as the College of Nurses of Ontario, now sets its own IELTS minimum. Check the regulator in the province where you will work.

Checked September 23, 2026

Rules and exceptions

Nursing is regulated by each province. Most internationally educated nurses start with the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS), which checks credentials. Since October 2022, NNAS no longer collects English test results.

You send proof of English directly to the provincial regulator, which sets its own IELTS minimum and list of accepted tests (CELBAN is also widely accepted). Check the regulator for the province where you plan to register.

Immigration is a separate step: Express Entry uses IELTS General Training, while nursing regulators set their own rules on which IELTS version they accept. Check both before you book so you do not take the wrong test.

UAE

DHA / DoH / MOHAP (Official page)

There is no single figure. DHA (Dubai), DoH (Abu Dhabi) and MOHAP each license nurses under their own rules, and employers may ask for more. Check the authority for the emirate where you will work.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

The UAE has three health licensing authorities: the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), Abu Dhabi's Department of Health (DoH) and the federal Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP). Each sets its own English rules.

Employers can ask for more than the licensing authority. Ask the hiring hospital which test and score it needs, and confirm with the authority for that emirate before you book.

Saudi Arabia

SCFHS (Official page)

We could not confirm a published IELTS minimum from SCFHS. Employers usually set the English requirement, so ask for it in writing and check with SCFHS before you book.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) classifies and registers nurses. We could not find a single published IELTS minimum on its website.

In practice, the employer sets the English requirement. Ask for it in writing and check the SCFHS classification guide for any test it names.

Why Nurses Struggle With IELTS (And How to Fix It)

Clinical Vocabulary ≠ IELTS Vocabulary

You know 'myocardial infarction' — but IELTS tests 'exacerbate', 'predominantly', and 'facilitate'. Focus your vocabulary study on the Academic Word List (AWL) and IELTS topic clusters (health, education, environment) — not medical dictionaries.

SOAP Notes ≠ IELTS Essay Writing

Nursing training prioritises brevity and structure (e.g., SBAR, SOAP). IELTS Writing Task 2 demands extended argumentation: topic sentences, evidence, explanation, and cohesive conclusions — all in 250+ words. Practice expanding bullet points into full, logical paragraphs.

Shift Work Sabotages Consistent Practice

Night shifts and rotating rosters make daily 2-hour study sessions unrealistic. Instead: use 15–20 minute micro-sessions between shifts, listen to IELTS Listening podcasts during commutes, and record short Speaking answers on your phone during breaks.

Frequently Asked Questions (IELTS for Nurses)

What IELTS score do nurses need?

It depends on the regulator, and the minimums are set per skill. The UK NMC and Australia's NMBA both require 7.0 in Listening, Reading and Speaking and 6.5 in Writing; Australia also requires 7.0 overall. New Zealand uses the same per-skill scores. Ireland requires 7.0 overall, with 7.0 in any three skills and at least 6.5 in the fourth.

Can I use IELTS General Training for nursing registration?

The regulators on this page ask for IELTS Academic. General Training is used for some immigration routes, such as Canada's Express Entry, so you may need different tests for different steps.

Can I combine scores from two IELTS tests?

In the UK, Australia and New Zealand, yes, within 12 months. The UK allows no score below 6.5 (6.0 in Writing) in either sitting; Australia allows no score below 6.5. Ireland accepts one sitting only.

How long are IELTS results valid for nursing registration?

Regulators generally accept results up to two years old when they assess your application. Plan your test date around when you will actually apply.

Is OET an alternative to IELTS for nurses?

Yes. The UK, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland accept OET. The NMC needs grade B in Listening, Reading and Speaking and C+ in Writing. OET uses healthcare tasks, while IELTS uses general academic topics, so choose the format that suits you.
