Why Physiotherapists Struggle With IELTS (And How to Fix It)

Rehabilitation Vocabulary ≠ IELTS Vocabulary

You can explain 'glenohumeral instability' confidently — but IELTS tests 'notwithstanding', 'exacerbate', and 'albeit'. Your rehabilitation vocabulary won't help in Reading or Writing. Focus on the Academic Word List and general IELTS topic clusters.

Treatment Notes ≠ Academic Essays

Physiotherapy documentation emphasises objective measures — ROM, strength grades, functional outcomes. IELTS Writing Task 2 demands extended argumentation with topic sentences, evidence, and cohesive conclusions in 250+ words. Practice expanding clinical observations into full paragraphs.

Back-to-Back Patient Sessions Limit Study Time

Full clinic schedules with 30-minute patient slots leave little time between sessions. Use 15–20 minute micro-sessions: listen to IELTS practice during commutes, record Speaking answers during lunch breaks, and write one Task 2 paragraph after your last patient.

Frequently Asked Questions (IELTS for Physiotherapists)

What IELTS score do physiotherapists need for HCPC registration?

The HCPC requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall with no element below 6.5. OET Grade B in all four skills is also accepted.

Is OET accepted for physiotherapy registration?

Yes — OET is accepted by physiotherapy regulators in the UK (HCPC), Australia (Physiotherapy Board), New Zealand, and Ireland (CORU). The healthcare-specific format includes rehabilitation scenarios.

Can I use IELTS General Training for physiotherapy registration?

No. IELTS General Training is not accepted for physiotherapy licensure. Only IELTS Academic meets physiotherapy board requirements.

How long are IELTS scores valid for physiotherapy registration?

Two years from the test date — standard across all major physiotherapy regulators. Plan your test around your clinical assessment or PCE exam schedule.

Do I need IELTS if I trained in an English-speaking country?

Possibly not. The HCPC and AHPRA have exemptions for physiotherapists who completed their entire degree in English in approved countries. Check official exemption criteria with your specific regulator.
