IELTS Band Score Requirements by Country

United Kingdom

HCPC (Official page)

7.0 overall, no element below 6.5

Band 7.0 overall, no element below 6.5. OET accepted (Grade B in all four skills). HCPC regulates both diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall with no element below 6.5 for radiographer registration — covering both diagnostic and therapeutic radiography.

OET is also accepted with Grade B in all four skills. International radiographers must demonstrate qualification equivalence and may need a period of supervised practice.

Radiographers are on the UK's Health and Care Worker visa occupation list, making immigration more straightforward once HCPC registration requirements are met.

Australia

MRPBA / AHPRA (Official page)

7.0 each component

Band 7.0 in each component in a single sitting. OET (Grade B), PTE Academic (65 each) also accepted. Required for MRPBA registration under AHPRA.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

The Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA) under AHPRA requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 in each component in a single test sitting. This applies to diagnostic radiographers, radiation therapists, and nuclear medicine technologists.

Accepted alternatives include OET (Grade B in all four skills) and PTE Academic (65 in each skill). Score combining across sittings is not permitted.

Radiography is on Australia's Skilled Occupation List. International radiographers may need a supervised practice period following qualification assessment.

Canada

CAMRT (Official page)

IELTS 7.0

Provincial regulators set English requirements. Most require IELTS Academic 7.0. CAMRT (Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists) oversees certification.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

The Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) manages national certification. Provincial regulators (e.g., CMRTO in Ontario) set registration requirements including English proficiency — most require IELTS Academic Band 7.0.

International radiographers typically need credential assessment through CAMRT and may need to complete bridging or supervised practice before full registration.

New Zealand

NZMRTB (Official page)

7.0 overall, 7.0 each

Band 7.0 overall and 7.0 in each component from a single sitting. OET (Grade B) accepted.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

The New Zealand Medical Radiation Technologists Board (NZMRTB) requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall and 7.0 in each component from a single test sitting within two years.

OET (Grade B in all four skills) is also accepted. Radiography is on New Zealand's skilled occupation lists, facilitating work visa applications.

Ireland

CORU (Official page)

7.0 overall, 6.5 min each

Band 7.0 overall, no band below 6.5. OET Grade B accepted. CORU regulates radiographers in Ireland.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

CORU requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall with no individual band below 6.5 for radiographer registration. OET Grade B is also accepted.

Test results must be less than two years old. CORU does not accept combined scores from multiple sittings.

UAE

DHA / DoH (Official page)

6.5–7.0 overall

Band 6.5–7.0 overall depending on emirate. OET and TOEFL iBT also accepted.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

Dubai Health Authority (DHA) requires IELTS Academic Band 6.5–7.0 overall for radiographer licensing. Government hospitals typically require Band 7.0.

Private imaging centres may accept Band 6.5. OET and TOEFL iBT are also accepted for DHA registration.

Why Radiographers Struggle With IELTS (And How to Fix It)

Imaging Terminology ≠ IELTS Vocabulary

You can describe 'anteroposterior projections' accurately — but IELTS tests 'notwithstanding', 'exacerbate', and 'albeit'. Technical imaging vocabulary won't help in Reading or Writing. Focus on the Academic Word List.

Reporting Templates ≠ Academic Essays

Radiography training emphasises structured reporting — concise, template-driven documentation. IELTS Writing Task 2 demands extended argumentation with topic sentences, evidence, and cohesive conclusions in 250+ words. Practice expanding brief observations into developed paragraphs.

Shift Rotas and On-Call Limit Study Time

Radiology departments often run 24/7 with rotating shifts and on-call commitments. Use 15–20 minute micro-sessions: listen to IELTS practice during commutes, record Speaking answers during quiet periods, and draft one Task 2 paragraph between shifts.
