New Zealand universities publish their own English entry requirements. Undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes can use different component minimums.
IELTS Academic is normally the version to investigate for tertiary study. Confirm result recency, One Skill Retake acceptance and alternatives on the programme page.
Skilled residence currently requires IELTS overall 6.5
Immigration New Zealand lists IELTS overall 6.5 or more for a principal applicant and 5.0 or more for a partner or dependent using the test route. It accepts Academic or General Training and lists One Skill Retake.
The test must be taken in person and be no more than two years old when applying. Some applicants can instead use specified citizenship, work or study evidence.
Registration bodies may impose component minimums
A skilled-residence threshold does not grant professional registration. Regulated professionals must meet the English policy of the relevant New Zealand authority.
