IELTS for Counsellors: Band Score Requirements for Counselling & Therapy Registration

Counselling in the UK operates under a dual system. Most counsellors register with BACP (voluntary), which doesn't mandate a specific IELTS score. However, counselling psychologists are regulated by the HCPC, which requires Band 7.0 overall with no element below 6.5.

For employment purposes, NHS trusts and private practices typically require Band 6.5-7.0 overall. UK Skilled Worker visa sponsors set their own English requirements, usually aligned with IELTS 6.5+ or B2 CEFR.

BACP accreditation involves demonstrating competence through supervised practice hours (450+), a qualifying course, and ongoing professional development — English proficiency is assessed holistically during training.

Australia has two main counselling bodies: PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia) and ACA (Australian Counselling Association). Neither is a statutory regulator, but membership is increasingly expected by employers and insurers.

PACFA requires evidence of English proficiency for overseas-trained practitioners, benchmarked at IELTS Academic Band 7.0 or equivalent (PTE 65 each, TOEFL iBT 94+, Cambridge C1 185+). ACA has similar expectations.

For skilled migration, counsellors fall under ANZSCO code 272111. The assessing authority (typically VETASSESS or AASW) will verify English proficiency as part of the skills assessment process.

Counselling regulation in Canada is fragmented. British Columbia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec have statutory regulation for counsellors/therapists. Other provinces rely on voluntary certification through CCPA.

British Columbia's BCACC (BC Association of Clinical Counsellors) requires demonstrated English proficiency. Ontario is moving toward statutory regulation (anticipated 2026-2027). IELTS Academic 6.5-7.0 is the typical benchmark across provinces.

For immigration via Express Entry, IELTS General Training determines CRS language points. However, provincial professional bodies require IELTS Academic (or equivalent) for registration purposes.

The New Zealand Association of Counsellors (NZAC) provides voluntary membership and professional standards. Overseas-qualified counsellors must demonstrate English proficiency — typically IELTS Academic Band 7.0 or equivalent.

For the skilled migrant visa category, Immigration New Zealand requires evidence of English ability. IELTS 6.5 overall satisfies most visa pathways, but NZAC membership may require the higher Band 7.0 threshold.

The Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) provides voluntary accreditation. There is no statutory regulation of counsellors in Ireland as of 2026, though CORU is expanding its scope.

IACP does not set a formal IELTS threshold, but employers typically require Band 6.5-7.0. International applicants must demonstrate English competence as part of the IACP accreditation process.
