Free IELTS Writing Checker with AI Band Score

Paste an IELTS Writing Task 2 essay (120+ words) and get an AI band estimate (9-band scale) in under a minute, with a band for each criterion and the one fix most likely to raise it. It is free, needs no account and checks up to 3 essays a day. It is an AI estimate, not an official IELTS score.

The checker separates Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy, so the result points to the one criterion worth revising first.

Score your IELTS Writing Task 2 essay

Use your own complete response. The sample essay shows how the tool works but does not count as a diagnosis of your writing.

Writing is scored across four criteria

A useful checker evaluates whether the essay answers the task, develops a clear position, organises ideas, uses vocabulary precisely and controls a range of grammatical structures. Grammar correction alone cannot estimate an IELTS Writing band.

The estimate is not an examiner-awarded score. Use it to find the weakest criterion, revise the essay and compare a later response written under similar conditions.

  • Task Response
  • Coherence and Cohesion
  • Lexical Resource
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy

How to get a more useful estimate

Submit a complete original Task 2 response written under realistic time pressure, with the exact question you answered. Texts of 50–119 words get a grammar and vocabulary check only; 120 words or more are scored on all four criteria.

After the result, choose one prioritised correction rather than trying to fix every sentence. Then write a new response to a different question and look for the same pattern.

What this Writing checker can and cannot tell you

AI feedback can surface patterns and make practice faster, but it can misread meaning or give a different band from an official examiner. Do not use a practice result as proof for an application or test booking.

The methodology page explains the scoring pipeline. The research page reports how closely the free checker matched reference bands, and why that is not yet an examiner comparison.

Questions about the free IELTS Writing checker

Is the IELTS Writing checker free?
Yes. You can check up to 3 essays a day without an account or a card (the limit is per network). Submitting the same essay and question again returns the saved result without using a check. A free account adds one full evaluation a week; paid plans add more.
How accurate is the AI band score?
In our test on 27 September 2026, the free checker's band was within half a band of the reference band for 73% of 55 Task 2 essays, with an average error of 0.51 band. It tended to under-score strong essays (reference band 7 or above). None of the reference bands were given by certified IELTS examiners, so this measures agreement with our references, not with official results. Read the full accuracy study
Which IELTS Writing tasks can I check?
Task 2 essays, which follow the same format in Academic and General Training. Task 1 reports and letters are not scored by this checker. Texts of 50–119 words get a grammar and vocabulary check only; 120 words or more are scored on all four criteria.
What do I get in the result?
An overall band estimate, a band for Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and the single improvement most likely to raise your score.
What happens to my essay?
Your essay is sent to our AI scoring provider to produce the result. Without an account, the essay and result are kept for 48 hours so you can reopen them or save them to an account, then they expire.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The checker runs in any current mobile browser; paste or type your essay and press the score button. No app is needed.
