IELTS for Pharmacists: Band Score Requirements for Pharmacy Registration Worldwide

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 in each component — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. There is no overall threshold; each band must individually meet 7.0.

OET is also accepted with Grade B in all four skills. International pharmacists must also complete the Overseas Pharmacists' Assessment Programme (OSPAP) and pass the GPhC registration assessment before practising.

GPhC does not allow combining scores from multiple IELTS sittings. Your test results must be less than two years old at the time of application.

The Pharmacy Board of Australia (under AHPRA) requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall, with 7.0 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking, and a minimum of 6.5 in Writing (updated April 2025). Results from a single sitting or a maximum of two sittings within 12 months are accepted.

Accepted alternatives include OET (Grade B in all four skills), PTE Academic (65 in each skill), and TOEFL iBT (94 overall with section minimums).

International pharmacists must also pass the KAPS (Knowledge Assessment of Pharmaceutical Sciences) exam and complete a supervised practice period.

The Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC) requires proof of English or French proficiency to sit the qualifying examinations. Most provincial pharmacy colleges require IELTS Academic Band 7.0 for full registration.

For immigration, pharmacists need CLB 7 via Express Entry. Provincial licensing requirements are separate — the Ontario College of Pharmacists and other provincial bodies set their own English proficiency standards.

The Pharmacy Council of New Zealand (PCNZ) requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall and 7.0 in each component from a single test sitting within two years.

OET (Grade B in all four skills) and PTE Academic (65 in each skill) are also accepted. PCNZ does not allow score combining from multiple sittings.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI) requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall with no individual band below 6.5. OET (Grade B in all four skills) is also accepted.

Test results must be less than two years old. The PSI does not accept combined scores from multiple test sittings.

Dubai Health Authority (DHA) requires IELTS Academic Band 6.5–7.0 overall for pharmacist licensing. Abu Dhabi's Department of Health (DoH) has similar requirements.

Hospital pharmacies and government facilities often require Band 7.0+. Community pharmacy roles may accept Band 6.5. OET and TOEFL iBT are also accepted.

The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) requires a minimum IELTS Academic Band 6.0 overall for pharmacist positions.

Clinical pharmacist and specialist roles at major hospitals often require Band 7.0+. English proficiency directly impacts career advancement and salary in Saudi healthcare.
