Step 1

Consejos del examinador IELTS sobre este tema

1

State your position unequivocally in the introduction, e.g., "I strongly agree that higher taxes on unhealthy food are a necessary measure." To balance, dedicate a paragraph to acknowledging counter-arguments, such as concerns about individual liberty or the regressive nature of such taxes, before robustly defending your primary stance with stronger arguments in subsequent paragraphs. This demonstrates a nuanced understanding while maintaining a clear argumentative line.

2

For arguments supporting taxation, consider the "sugar tax" implemented in the UK, which has demonstrably led to manufacturers reducing sugar content in beverages. You could also cite Mexico's soda tax, which showed a measurable decrease in consumption, particularly among lower-income groups. Conversely, if arguing against, mention the regressive nature of such taxes, disproportionately affecting low-income households, or the potential for unintended consequences like the failure of Denmark's fat tax.

3

A common mistake is discussing both sides of the argument (for and against taxes) equally without clearly stating and consistently defending your own position. Avoid this by ensuring your introduction explicitly states your stance and that each subsequent body paragraph, even if acknowledging a counter-argument, ultimately reinforces or elaborates on your primary agreement or disagreement. Do not just present information; argue a point.

4

Employ a clear linking strategy to guide the reader through your argument, especially when moving between your main points and acknowledging counter-arguments. Use phrases like "While it is tempting to argue that..." followed by "However, a more robust perspective reveals..." to transition from a concession to your main point. Similarly, use "Furthermore," or "Moreover," to add supporting evidence, and "Consequently," or "As a result," to explain the implications of your stance.

5

For a band 8-9, examiners look for a sophisticated and nuanced argument that goes beyond simply stating agreement or disagreement. You must demonstrate a deep understanding of the socio-economic implications of such a tax, discussing its potential impact on different demographics, the food industry, and government revenue, supported by well-chosen, specific examples. Precision in vocabulary related to public health policy, fiscal measures, and consumer behaviour, coupled with complex grammatical structures used accurately, will be crucial.

Demuestra control gramatical avanzado. Empieza con «Aunque/While» + opinión opuesta, luego expresa tu postura — muestra pensamiento matizado.

Condicional (tipo 2)
