Consejos del examinador IELTS sobre este tema

1

In your introduction, explicitly state whether you view longer life as predominantly an advantage or a disadvantage, or a balanced perspective where one clearly outweighs the other. While acknowledging counter-arguments in a separate paragraph or a well-placed sentence (e.g., 'While it is true that longer life presents economic challenges...'), ensure your thesis and subsequent body paragraphs consistently reinforce your primary stance, using phrases like 'However, the benefits overwhelmingly outweigh these concerns.'

2

To support your argument, consider specific examples. If arguing for advantage, you could reference the 'Blue Zones' phenomenon (e.g., Okinawa, Sardinia) where lifestyle factors contribute to longevity and community well-being, or discuss how experienced professionals contribute to mentorship and innovation for longer, such as in Japan's aging workforce. Conversely, if arguing disadvantage, you might cite the strain on public health systems in countries like Germany or Italy, where an aging population leads to increased healthcare expenditure and pension deficits.

3

The most common mistake on this question is to merely list advantages and disadvantages without clearly articulating and defending a primary opinion. Avoid presenting a 'balanced' essay that simply describes both sides equally; instead, choose a side (or a clear dominant side) and dedicate the majority of your essay to developing arguments that support your chosen stance, using the opposing view only for concession and rebuttal.

4

For an opinion essay, employ a 'concession-rebuttal' linking strategy. Start a body paragraph by acknowledging a counter-argument (e.g., 'Admittedly, some might contend that an extended lifespan places immense pressure on social security systems...'), then immediately pivot to your main argument using strong transition words (e.g., 'However, this perspective often overlooks the significant contributions older individuals make...' or 'Nevertheless, the benefits far outweigh these challenges...'). This demonstrates sophisticated argumentation.

5

For a band 8-9, examiners look for a nuanced exploration of the implications of longer life, not just a superficial list of pros and cons. This includes demonstrating an understanding of complex socio-economic factors (e.g., intergenerational equity, productivity shifts, quality of life in old age) and using precise, academic vocabulary related to demographics and public policy. Your arguments should be fully extended with logical reasoning and relevant, well-integrated examples, consistently supporting a clear, sophisticated thesis.

Grammar Patterns for Band 7+

Oración compleja con concesión

Although some argue that technology isolates people, the evidence suggests it strengthens connections.

Demuestra control gramatical avanzado. Empieza con «Aunque/While» + opinión opuesta, luego expresa tu postura — muestra pensamiento matizado.

Condicional (tipo 2)

If governments invested more in public transport, traffic congestion would decrease significantly.

Ideal para escenarios hipotéticos y soluciones. Estructura: «Si + pretérito imperfecto del subjuntivo, condicional simple» — refleja flexibilidad e imaginación.

Voz pasiva para tono academic

It is often argued that education should be free. However, this view overlooks the practical challenges.

Academic writing prefiere construcciones pasivas. «Se + verbo en participio + que…» crea un tono autoritario y objetivo.

Cláusula relativa

Students who study abroad, which is becoming increasingly common, tend to develop greater independence.

Agrega sofisticación sin complejidad. Usa «quien» para personas, «lo cual» para cosas, «que» para ambos.

Grupo nominal para densidad

The rapid expansion of urban areas has led to increased pollution levels.

Transmite más información en menos palabras. «La implementación de políticas efectivas» vs «las políticas se implementan de forma efectiva» — mejora tu puntaje Lexical Resource.
