IELTS Rounding Rules Explained
IELTS calculates your overall band by averaging your four skill scores and rounding to the nearest half band. The key detail most test-takers miss: when the average falls exactly on .25, it always rounds UP to .5 — and .75 always rounds UP to the next whole band.
This means scoring Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.5 gives you an average of 6.5 — an overall Band 6.5. But if your Writing were 6.5 instead of 6.0, the average would be 6.625, which rounds down to 6.5. You'd need at least one skill at 7.0 to push the average to 6.75, which rounds up to 7.0.
