IELTS for Physiotherapists: Band Score Requirements for Physiotherapy Registration Worldwide

The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall with no element below 6.5 for physiotherapist registration.

OET is also accepted with Grade B in all four skills. International physiotherapists must also demonstrate that their qualifications meet HCPC standards — this may involve a period of supervised practice.

The HCPC does not allow combining scores from multiple IELTS sittings. Results must be less than two years old at time of application.

The Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC) under AHPRA requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 in each component in a single test sitting. Score combining is not permitted.

Accepted alternatives include OET (Grade B in all four skills) and PTE Academic (65 in each skill). International physiotherapists must also pass the APC clinical assessment.

A supervised practice period of up to 12 months may be required depending on assessment outcome and qualification recognition.

The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (CAPR) manages the Physiotherapy Competency Examination (PCE). English proficiency must be demonstrated before sitting the exam, and most provincial colleges require IELTS Academic Band 7.0.

Provincial regulators (College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, etc.) set final registration requirements. International physiotherapists may also need credential evaluation through the CAPR credentialing process.

The Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall and 7.0 in each component from a single test sitting within two years.

OET (Grade B in all four skills) and PTE Academic (65 in each skill) are also accepted. Score combining from multiple sittings is not allowed.

CORU (Ireland's multi-profession health regulator) requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall with no individual band below 6.5 for physiotherapist registration. OET Grade B is also accepted.

Test results must be less than two years old. CORU does not accept combined scores from multiple test sittings.

Dubai Health Authority (DHA) requires IELTS Academic Band 6.5–7.0 overall for physiotherapist licensing. Requirements vary by emirate and facility type.

Hospital-based physiotherapy roles and government facilities typically require Band 7.0. Private clinics may accept Band 6.5. OET and TOEFL iBT are also accepted.

The Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS) requires a minimum IELTS Academic Band 6.0 overall for physiotherapist positions.

Senior physiotherapy roles and positions at major hospitals often require Band 7.0+. English proficiency impacts placement quality and career progression.
