Under Pearson's July 2025 concordance, PTE Academic 55 is the minimum score for IELTS 6.5, and the IELTS 6.5 range runs from PTE 55 to 62. IELTS 6.5 is a common minimum for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, so 55 is one of the most important PTE thresholds. A score of 54 falls in the IELTS 6.0 range (PTE 47–54).

Older conversion tables put IELTS 6.5 at PTE 58, so you may still see that number quoted. What counts for an application is the PTE minimum the university or authority publishes, which can differ from the concordance — check it directly before you book or send scores.

PTE Academic 63 is the minimum score for IELTS 7.0 in Pearson's concordance, and the IELTS 7.0 range runs from PTE 63 to 70. IELTS 7.0 is a frequent requirement for competitive postgraduate programmes and for professional registration.

For Canadian immigration, this table does not apply: IRCC accepts PTE Core rather than PTE Academic and converts it to CLB levels skill by skill using its own table. If you are targeting Canadian PR, use IRCC's PTE Core table instead.

PTE Academic 71 is the minimum score for IELTS 7.5 in Pearson's concordance, and the IELTS 7.5 range runs from PTE 71 to 78. If you scored 70, you are at the top of the IELTS 7.0 range, one point below 7.5.

PTE Academic 79 is the minimum score for IELTS 8.0 in Pearson's concordance. The IELTS 8.0 range runs from PTE 79 to 85, IELTS 8.5 from 86 to 89, and PTE 90 corresponds to IELTS 9.0. A score of 79 meets the English requirement of almost all university programmes.

Certain situations make IELTS the necessary or better choice.
