IELTS for Electricians: Band Score Requirements for Skilled Worker Visas & Licensing

The Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) is the licensing authority for electricians in New Zealand. EWRB assesses trade qualifications and practical competence — but does not set English language requirements.

English proficiency requirements come from Immigration New Zealand (INZ). The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) requires IELTS General Training Band 5.0 overall. For the Skilled Migrant Category (points-based), IELTS 6.5 overall is typically expected.

Electrician is on New Zealand's Green List (Tier 2), providing a direct pathway to residence after two years of work. You'll need to have your trade qualifications recognised by EWRB before or after arrival.

Electrical licensing in Australia is state-based: Energy Safe Victoria, Fair Trading NSW, Electrical Safety Office (QLD), and equivalents. None require IELTS — licensing is based on trade qualifications and practical assessments.

IELTS requirements come from the Department of Home Affairs for visa applications. Subclass 482 (employer-sponsored) requires IELTS GT Band 5.0 overall with no component below 4.5. For permanent migration (189/190), higher scores earn points: Band 7.0 = 10 points, Band 8.0 = 20 points.

You'll need a skills assessment from TRA (Trades Recognition Australia), which evaluates your qualifications against Australian standards. TRA does not set its own English requirement — that comes from the visa pathway.

UK electrical competence is certified through NICEIC, NAPIT, or Part P Building Regulations — none require IELTS. The English requirement comes from the Skilled Worker visa.

Electrician (SOC 5241) requires CEFR B1 for the Skilled Worker visa (IELTS GT 4.0 in each component). Electricians are on the Shortage Occupation List, with a reduced salary threshold of £26,200 (vs £38,700 standard).

After five years on a Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). The original IELTS score at B1 level satisfies the ILR English requirement.

Electrical licensing in Canada is provincial: OCOT (Ontario), ITA (British Columbia), Alberta Apprenticeship, and equivalents. Provincial licensing focuses on trade credentials — IELTS is not an electrical licensing requirement.

For Express Entry (Federal Skilled Trades Program), minimum CLB 5 (IELTS GT: L5.0 R4.0 W5.0 S5.0) is required for Listening and Speaking, CLB 4 for Reading and Writing. Higher scores boost CRS ranking. Electrician is NOC 72200.

The UAE does not require IELTS for electrician work visas. Employer-sponsored permits are based on trade qualifications and experience — English testing is not mandated by immigration or licensing authorities.

Large construction firms and MEP contractors may conduct informal English assessments during hiring, particularly for supervisory or site management roles.
