나의 IELTS 도전기: 시험에 고전하던 수험생에서 Band 8.0 코치가 되기까지
해외로 이주한 목표는 하나였습니다: 영어 실력이 문을 열어주는 새로운 삶을 만드는 것. IELTS가 그 관문이었지만, 이를 통과하는 것은 상상했던 것보다 훨씬 어려웠습니다.
예상보다 어려웠습니다. IELTS 시험을 6번 봤고, 매번 시도할 때마다 일반적인 가이드북이나 강사로는 해결할 수 없는 부족한 부분이 드러났습니다. 점수가 정체되는 좌절감을 직접 알고 있습니다.
4번째 시도에서 전략을 완전히 바꿨어요. 표현 암기 대신, 시험 자체를 역설계했습니다. 시험관이 Writing Task 2에서 실제로 무엇에 점수를 주는지, Band 7와 Band 8 간에 lexical resource가 어떻게 다른지를 분석했죠. 개발자답게 IELTS를 하나의 시스템으로 접근했어요. 패턴을 찾고, 불필요한 요소를 제거하고, 취약점만 집중 공략했습니다. 6번째 시도에서 Band 8.0를 받았습니다. 운이 아니라, 설계의 결과였습니다.
하지만 가장 큰 깨달음은 최종 결과 이후에 찾아왔습니다: 수천 명의 학생들이 같은 고민을 겪고 있었습니다. 어디서 점수를 잃는지, 왜 멈추는지 알려줄 수 있는 정확하고 즉각적인 피드백 없이 공부하고 있었습니다.
