IELTS for Teachers: Band Score Requirements for Teaching Registration Worldwide

Teaching has some of the highest IELTS minimums. For Australia's AITSL skills assessment you need IELTS Academic with 8.0 in Listening and Speaking and 7.0 in Reading and Writing, on one test report. Rows for other countries show whether we have re-checked them recently.

AITSL requirements checked on 23 September 2026. Confirm other countries with the regulator before you book.

Checked September 23, 2026

Rules and exceptions

AITSL assesses teachers for skilled migration. It requires IELTS Academic, taken on paper or computer at a test centre, with 7.0 in Reading and Writing and 8.0 in Listening and Speaking, on a single test report from the last 24 months.

AITSL does not accept PTE, TOEFL, Cambridge tests or IELTS Online for the skills assessment, but it does accept One Skill Retake results.

Teacher registration is a separate step run by each state or territory authority, which publishes its own English rules. Check the authority for the state where you will teach.

United Kingdom

TRA (Official page)

We could not confirm a fixed IELTS band on the TRA's QTS guidance. Your visa route or training provider sets the English requirement, so check both before you book.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

England's Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) awards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). We could not confirm a fixed IELTS band in its QTS guidance; the English requirement usually comes from your visa route or teacher training provider.

Teachers from majority English-speaking countries (e.g., USA, Canada, South Africa) may be exempt. However, QTS still requires qualification assessment — and many candidates complete an ‘assessment-only’ route to demonstrate teaching competence in English.

Independent and international schools do not always require QTS and set their own English expectations. State-maintained schools generally require QTS.

New Zealand

NZQA / Teaching Council (Official page)

7.0 overall, 7.0 each

7.0 overall, 7.0 in each component. Valid for 2 years.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

The Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (under NZQA) requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall — with no less than Band 7.0 in each skill. Results must be from one test taken within the last two years.

PTE Academic (65 overall, 65 each) and Cambridge English (185 overall, 176 each) are accepted alternatives. In addition to English proficiency, teachers must undergo qualification assessment and may be required to complete a mentoring programme or provisional registration period.

Canada

OCT / Provincial (Official page)

7.0 overall

7.0 overall. Provincial requirements vary. PTE Academic accepted in some regions.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

Teacher certification in Canada is managed provincially — meaning IELTS requirements differ across regions. The Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall. British Columbia’s TRB and Alberta’s ATA have similar standards.

Note: Some provinces accept IELTS General Training for immigration purposes — but only Academic is accepted for teaching licensure. Always check your target province’s official site before testing.

Canadian international schools abroad often recruit with flexible English requirements — but teaching in Canada’s public system requires full provincial certification, including meeting the local IELTS Academic threshold.

Hong Kong

EDB (Official page)

6.5-7.0 overall

6.5–7.0 overall, depending on school type and role. Native English speaker exemptions apply.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

The Education Bureau (EDB) accepts either IELTS Academic or the locally developed Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (LPAT). For IELTS, requirements range from Band 6.5 to 7.0 overall — varying by school type, subject area, and whether you’re applying as a Native English Teacher (NET).

International schools in Hong Kong set independent standards — many requiring Band 7.0+, especially for leadership or bilingual curriculum roles. NET Scheme applicants may follow different pathways, including exemption based on nationality and degree background.

Singapore

MOE (Official page)

7.0 overall

7.0 overall. Higher scores strongly preferred for competitive MOE positions.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

The Ministry of Education (MOE) requires IELTS Academic Band 7.0 overall for internationally trained teachers. Given Singapore’s emphasis on academic excellence and bilingual instruction, higher scores (Band 7.5+) significantly strengthen your application for competitive postings.

International schools — many offering IB, British, or American curricula — set their own English standards. Most require Band 6.5–7.0, though top-tier institutions increasingly prefer Band 7.5+ in Speaking and Writing to support collaborative, inquiry-based learning.

UAE

KHDA / ADEK (Official page)

6.5-7.0 overall

6.5–7.0 overall. KHDA (Dubai) and ADEK (Abu Dhabi) have separate frameworks.

Not re-checked recently. Confirm on the official page before you book.

Rules and exceptions

The UAE has two main education regulators: KHDA (Dubai) and ADEK (Abu Dhabi). Both require IELTS Academic — typically Band 6.5–7.0 overall — though exact thresholds depend on emirate, school type (e.g., private, bilingual, or MOE-affiliated), and teaching role.

Most international schools in the UAE — which make up over 90% of the sector — require at least Band 6.5 overall. Government-linked or premium schools may ask for Band 7.0+ in Speaking and Listening to ensure effective parent communication and curriculum delivery.

Why IELTS Is Harder for Teachers — And How to Overcome It

The Band 8.0 Speaking Barrier (Australia)

AITSL’s Band 8.0 in Speaking is the highest IELTS requirement for any regulated profession — surpassing even doctors and engineers. It demands near-native fluency: minimal hesitation, precise word stress, sophisticated paraphrasing, and self-correction that sounds natural — not rehearsed. Daily timed practice + expert feedback is essential.

Over-Correcting Grammar Hurts Your Fluency Score

As a teacher, you’re wired to monitor grammar — but in IELTS Speaking, excessive self-correction and mid-sentence pauses damage your Fluency & Coherence score. Train yourself to prioritise smooth delivery: minor errors cost fewer marks than broken rhythm or unnatural silence.

Simplifying Language Undermines Lexical Resource

Years of adapting speech for students condition teachers to use simple vocabulary and short sentences — the opposite of what IELTS examiners reward. Consciously practise advanced synonyms (‘mitigate’ vs. ‘reduce’), complex clauses (‘whereas’, ‘notwithstanding’), and idiomatic phrasing — even when it feels unnatural at first.

Frequently Asked Questions About IELTS for Teachers

What IELTS band score do teachers need?

It depends on the country and the step. Australia's AITSL skills assessment requires IELTS Academic with 8.0 in Listening and Speaking and 7.0 in Reading and Writing. For other countries, check the regulator's current page linked in the table.

Why are IELTS requirements higher for teachers than other professions?

Teachers shape students’ language development, deliver complex curriculum content, manage dynamic classroom discussions, and communicate with parents and colleagues. Regulators demand high English proficiency to ensure clarity, credibility, and instructional effectiveness — especially in multilingual or high-stakes education systems.

Is there an alternative to IELTS for teaching registration?

It depends on the regulator. AITSL accepts only IELTS Academic for the skills assessment. Other regulators may accept PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT or local tests such as Hong Kong's LPAT, so check the accepted-test list before you book.

Do international schools require IELTS?

Many international schools accept alternative evidence of English proficiency — such as prior teaching experience in English-medium schools, native-speaker status, or successful interviews. Still, most expect at least Band 6.5–7.0 IELTS Academic — especially for leadership or curriculum-design roles.

Can I combine IELTS scores from multiple test sittings?

Usually not. AITSL needs all four scores on one test report, although it accepts a One Skill Retake result. Check your regulator's rules before planning a retake.
