Step 1

Consejos del examinador IELTS sobre este tema

1

State your clear position (e.g., 'I largely disagree' or 'I strongly agree') in your introduction and ensure every body paragraph directly supports this stance. To acknowledge the opposing view without weakening your argument, use concessionary phrases like 'While it is true that...' or 'Admittedly, some may argue...', immediately followed by a strong rebuttal or qualification such as 'however, this perspective often overlooks...' to pivot back to your main argument.

2

Consider specific arguments such as how video conferencing platforms (e.g., Zoom, Skype) enable families to maintain strong ties across geographical distances, or how online support groups foster niche communities for individuals with shared interests or challenges. Conversely, you could discuss the 'phubbing' phenomenon (phone snubbing) in social settings or reference studies linking excessive social media use to feelings of isolation, despite increased connectivity.

3

The most common mistake on this question is generalising about 'technology' without specifying its various forms or how they impact relationships. Avoid simply listing generic pros and cons of technology; instead, focus precisely on how specific communication technologies (e.g., instant messaging, social networking sites, video calls) either enhance or detract from the *quality, depth, or frequency* of social interactions.

4

For this opinion-based essay, employ a contrastive linking strategy. When presenting your main points, use strong affirmative transitions like 'Crucially,' 'Furthermore,' or 'Another compelling argument is that'. If you choose to acknowledge the counter-argument, introduce it with 'Admittedly,' or 'Conversely, some contend that,' and then immediately follow with a strong contrasting link such as 'However, this viewpoint neglects...' or 'Nonetheless, the predominant evidence suggests...'.

5

Examiners look for a nuanced and sophisticated argument that explores the complexity of modern communication's impact, rather than a simplistic 'good' or 'bad' stance. A band 8-9 answer will demonstrate a deep understanding by discussing *how* technology is used, *by whom*, and *for what purpose*, using precise vocabulary related to social dynamics and providing well-developed, specific examples that clearly illustrate the points made, all while maintaining a consistent and well-supported position.

Grammar Patterns for Band 7+

Oración compleja con concesión

Although some argue that technology isolates people, the evidence suggests it strengthens connections.

Demuestra control gramatical avanzado. Empieza con «Aunque/While» + opinión opuesta, luego expresa tu postura — muestra pensamiento matizado.

Condicional (tipo 2)

If governments invested more in public transport, traffic congestion would decrease significantly.

Ideal para escenarios hipotéticos y soluciones. Estructura: «Si + pretérito imperfecto del subjuntivo, condicional simple» — refleja flexibilidad e imaginación.

Voz pasiva para tono academic

It is often argued that education should be free. However, this view overlooks the practical challenges.

Academic writing prefiere construcciones pasivas. «Se + verbo en participio + que…» crea un tono autoritario y objetivo.

Cláusula relativa

Students who study abroad, which is becoming increasingly common, tend to develop greater independence.

Agrega sofisticación sin complejidad. Usa «quien» para personas, «lo cual» para cosas, «que» para ambos.

Grupo nominal para densidad

The rapid expansion of urban areas has led to increased pollution levels.

Transmite más información en menos palabras. «La implementación de políticas efectivas» vs «las políticas se implementan de forma efectiva» — mejora tu puntaje Lexical Resource.
