IELTS for Teachers: Score Requirements for Teaching Registration Worldwide

The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) sets the highest IELTS requirements of any teaching regulatory body worldwide. Teachers must achieve 8.0 in speaking and listening, and 7.5 in reading and writing — significantly higher than most other professions.

These requirements apply to all teachers seeking registration through state and territory regulatory authorities. There is no alternative test like OET available for teachers. PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are accepted with equivalent scores.

International schools in Australia may set their own requirements, which are sometimes lower than AITSL standards. However, teachers in these schools may not be eligible for full teaching registration.

The Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) requires internationally trained teachers to demonstrate English proficiency for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The requirement is 7.5 in reading and writing, and 7.0 in speaking and listening on IELTS Academic.

Teachers from countries where English is an official language may be exempt from the IELTS requirement. The UK also requires teachers to have their qualifications assessed and may require additional training through an assessment-only QTS route.

International schools and independent schools in the UK are not required to hire teachers with QTS, so IELTS requirements may vary. State-maintained schools require QTS and therefore the full IELTS score.

The Teaching Council of New Zealand (under NZQA frameworks) requires internationally qualified teachers to achieve IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with 7.0 in each component. Results must be from a single test sitting within the past 2 years.

New Zealand also accepts PTE Academic (65 overall, 65 each) and Cambridge English (185 overall, 176 each). Teachers must also have their qualifications assessed and may need to complete a mentoring programme.

Teaching registration in Canada is regulated provincially. The Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) is the largest regulatory body and requires IELTS Academic 7.0 overall. Other provinces have similar requirements through their respective colleges of teachers.

Requirements vary by province — British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec each have their own certification processes. Some provinces accept IELTS General Training for immigration but require Academic for teaching certification.

Canadian international schools abroad often recruit teachers with lower IELTS requirements, but teaching within Canada's public system requires full provincial certification.

The Education Bureau (EDB) of Hong Kong requires English language teachers to demonstrate proficiency through IELTS or the Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers (LPAT). IELTS requirements typically range from 6.5 to 7.0 overall depending on the school type.

Native English-speaking teachers (NETs) recruited under the NET Scheme may have different requirements. International schools in Hong Kong set their own standards, which vary widely but generally require at least 7.0 overall.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) Singapore requires internationally trained teachers to demonstrate English proficiency with an IELTS Academic score of 7.0 overall. Singapore's highly competitive education system means higher scores are preferred.

International schools in Singapore, many of which follow British, American, or IB curricula, set their own IELTS requirements. These are generally around 6.5-7.0, though top-tier international schools may require higher scores.

The UAE has multiple regulatory bodies: KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority) in Dubai and ADEK (Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge) in Abu Dhabi. IELTS requirements range from 6.5 to 7.0 overall depending on the emirate and school type.

International schools in the UAE, which form the majority of the education sector, generally require IELTS 6.5 overall for teaching positions. Government schools and bilingual schools may have different requirements.
