FAQ: University IELTS Requirements

What IELTS score do most universities require?
Most universities require an overall IELTS Academic band score between 6.0 and 7.0. Undergraduate programmes typically ask for 6.0–6.5, while postgraduate programmes often require 6.5–7.5. Competitive programmes like Medicine or Law may require 7.0+ with no component below 7.0.
Do universities accept IELTS General Training?
The vast majority of universities require IELTS Academic, not General Training. General Training is primarily accepted for immigration and some vocational courses. Always check your target university’s specific requirements — submitting the wrong test type can delay your application.
What are component score requirements?
Many universities set minimum scores for individual IELTS components (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) in addition to the overall band. Writing is the most commonly restricted component, often requiring 6.0 or 6.5 minimum even when the overall requirement is lower.
Can I get conditional admission with a lower IELTS score?
Yes. Many universities offer conditional admission if your IELTS score is 0.5–1.0 bands below the requirement. You may need to complete a pre-sessional English course before starting your degree. The length of the course depends on the gap between your score and the requirement.
